Tue Jan 28 18:49:46 UTC 2025: ## Vellore Fort Undergoes Major Restoration

**VELLORE, INDIA (January 29, 2025)** – The 16th-century Vellore Fort is undergoing a significant restoration project, focusing on the removal of extensive vegetation that has been damaging its granite walls. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), responsible for maintaining the 137-acre complex, is leading the effort.

The three-kilometer-long parapet wall is the primary focus, with workers carefully removing plants that have grown into cracks, weakening the structure. The challenging work, hampered by the moat’s 29-foot depth and the inaccessible nature of parts of the wall, is expected to take a month to complete. Workers utilize long ladders and must be skilled swimmers to access sections above the moat.

In addition to vegetation removal, the ASI is installing steel fencing to prevent trespassing, particularly near the moat. The Vellore Corporation is collaborating by providing improved visitor amenities, including benches, water taps, washrooms, and ornamental lighting along the fort’s outer wall. The restoration aims to preserve the historical significance of the fort while enhancing its accessibility and appeal to visitors.
