Wed Jan 29 17:49:12 UTC 2025: **Mangalore Conference Calls for National Radiation Dose Registry**
MANGALURU, INDIA – January 29, 2025 – Dinesh Kumar Shukla, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), advocated for a national radiation dose registry at the 35th IARP National Conference on Radiation Protection in Mangaluru. The conference, themed “Radiation protection for sustainable nuclear energy and adapting to climate and technological changes,” highlighted the need for better monitoring of radiation exposure among the general public.
Currently, a registry exists for occupational radiation exposure, but Mr. Shukla emphasized the lack of a similar system to track radiation doses received by individuals during medical procedures. He pointed out the difficulty in tracking cumulative radiation exposure when patients change healthcare providers, highlighting the need for a comprehensive national registry.
B. Vinod Kumar, Site Director of the Kaiga Generating Station, championed nuclear energy as a clean, reliable, and affordable solution for reducing carbon emissions. He underscored that nuclear power plants produce minimal greenhouse gases, comparable to wind power and significantly less than solar energy. He stressed the importance of the Indian nuclear power program for energy security and sustainable development.
The three-day conference brought together radiation protection experts to discuss these crucial issues and explore solutions for improving radiation safety in India.
