Wed Jan 29 16:54:20 UTC 2025: ## Hundreds Evacuated After Mysterious Illness Kills 17 in Indian Village
**Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, January 29, 2025** – Eighty-seven families (364 individuals) have been evacuated from Badhal village in Rajouri district following a mysterious illness that has claimed 17 lives and sickened 31 others since December 7th. Authorities, citing encouraging signs with no new cases reported since January 24th, relocated the families to makeshift facilities at government buildings in the district headquarters as a precautionary measure.
The affected individuals initially presented symptoms including high fever, body aches, vomiting, and unconsciousness. While multiple testing agencies have ruled out the spread of a contagious disease, initial hospital analysis suggests that atropine, an antidote for organophosphate poisoning, may be effective in treating the illness. One doctor stated that its administration “is turning out to be a gamechanger.”
The government has implemented comprehensive support for the displaced families, providing food, water, medical care, and essential supplies. Children are receiving care from Anganwadi workers and CDPOs, while temporary schooling and vocational training programs have been established. Authorities are also monitoring the remaining villagers, dividing the village into 14 clusters for enhanced surveillance. Food and water samples are being regularly tested, and a control room has been set up to manage the situation and address public concerns. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the cause of the illness.
