**THOOTHUKUDI, January 29, 2025** – Police in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, have thwarted a beedi leaf smuggling operation, seizing 1.1 tonnes of leaves and four two-wheelers. Coastal Security Group police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the contraband at Elluvilai beach near Tiruchendur in the early hours of Wednesday. A group of smugglers fled the scene as police approached, leaving behind 37 bundles of beedi leaves, each weighing 30 kg. Investigations are underway to apprehend the individuals involved. The seized goods are believed to have been destined for Sri Lanka.
