Wed Jan 29 07:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Minor Stampede at Kumbh Mela; Injuries Reported, No Fatalities Confirmed

**Prayagraj, India** – A minor stampede occurred at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India, around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, resulting in injuries to several pilgrims. While initial reports caused widespread concern, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath clarified that the incident involved a relatively small number of people attempting to breach barricades near the Akhara Marg. These barricades were in place for the ritualistic bath of the Akharas (religious orders).

Over 30 million pilgrims had already taken the holy dip in the Sangam (confluence of three rivers) by 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, before the incident. The Chief Minister stated that those injured were promptly attended to and transported to hospitals for treatment, some with serious injuries. He emphasized that the situation is under control and appealed for calm, urging people to avoid spreading rumors.

Approximately 80 to 100 million pilgrims are estimated to be present in Prayagraj for the Mauni Amavasya festival. The large crowds at the Sangam created significant pressure on the area. The administration is maintaining a high alert status in the Mela area. Despite the incident, the Sangam remains crowded with pilgrims taking the holy dip.

High-level officials, including the Chief Secretary, DGP, and key ministers, are closely monitoring the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and Governor Anandiben Patel are also reportedly receiving regular updates on the situation. The administration is working to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the Kumbh Mela.
