Wed Jan 29 03:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Kumbh Mela Stampede Leads to Strict Roadblocks Around Prayagraj
**Prayagraj, India** – Following a stampede at the ongoing Kumbh Mela, authorities have implemented strict measures to control the influx of pilgrims into Prayagraj. Roads leading to the city have been effectively sealed off, with vehicles being turned back at various checkpoints across multiple districts.
Police teams in districts including Bhadohi, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Kaushambi, and Jaunpur are actively blocking and diverting vehicles headed towards Prayagraj. Significant traffic jams have resulted, with kilometers-long queues reported on highways approaching the city from Varanasi and other areas. For instance, vehicles traveling from Varanasi are being stopped at Baburasa in Bhadohi, causing major highway congestion. Similar blockades are in place near Mirzamurad in Varanasi and at Babatpur, causing significant delays.
Authorities cite concerns over overcrowding following the stampede as the reason for the restrictions. While accommodations for stranded pilgrims, including food, rest areas, and sanitation facilities, are being provided at designated holding areas, access to the Kumbh Mela site is currently severely restricted. In some areas, such as Mungra border in Jaunpur, only pedestrian access is allowed. Border checkpoints in Sonbhadra are also preventing vehicles from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha from entering.
Officials state that these measures are temporary and will remain in place until further notice. The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to manage the traffic flow and ensure the safety of pilgrims.
