Wed Jan 29 00:22:21 IST 2025: ## Modi Congratulates Uttarakhand on UCC Implementation, Likens it to Sporting Spirit

**Dehradun, India** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Uttarakhand for becoming the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), praising it as a move that embodies the spirit of fair play and equality. Speaking at the inauguration of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Modi described the UCC as a “secular civil code” that promotes the dignity of women and strengthens the core principles of the Constitution.

He drew a parallel between the UCC and the spirit of sportsmanship, highlighting the principle of equality and non-discrimination inherent in both. “Every win, every medal is the result of collective effort,” Modi said. “Sports teach us teamwork; the UCC shares this same spirit – no discrimination, everyone equal.”

The UCC, implemented in Uttarakhand on January 27th, aims to replace personal laws based on religion with a uniform set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the implementation fulfills a three-year-old electoral promise and will put a complete stop to practices like halala, polygamy, and triple talaq. He emphasized that the UCC is not targeted against any particular religion or community but aims to ensure equal rights for all. January 27th will now be observed as “Uniform Civil Code Day” in the state. The Prime Minister’s commendation marks a significant political endorsement of the controversial law.
