Wed Jan 29 03:00:00 UTC 2025: **Kumbh Mela Stampede: CM Yogi Appeals for Calm, Assures Central Support**
Prayagraj, India – A stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj early this morning has resulted in casualties and injuries. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued an appeal for calm, urging pilgrims to avoid the congested Sangam confluence and bathe at their nearest ghats. He also requested that pilgrims follow administrative instructions and avoid spreading rumors.
The stampede, which occurred around 1:00 AM near the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, is currently under investigation. While the exact cause remains unclear, eyewitness accounts suggest a sudden surge in the crowd triggered the incident. Many pilgrims climbed and broke barricades in their attempt to move forward.
Ambulances transported the injured to hospitals in Prayagraj, with some later transferred to other facilities in the city. Reports indicate that some individuals are still searching for missing loved ones.
Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted CM Yogi to offer their support and express concern. The Akhara Parishad, representing Hindu ascetics, has expressed sorrow and cancelled the planned Shahi Snan (royal bath). Many sadhus performed their rituals closer to their camps.
The stampede occurred ahead of the main bathing festival, Mauni Amavasya, which was expected to draw 8 to 10 million pilgrims. Millions had already gathered in Prayagraj in anticipation. Authorities are working to manage the situation and ensure the safety of remaining pilgrims.
