Tue Jan 28 13:38:40 UTC 2025: ## Delhi and Punjab Accuse Haryana of Deliberate Water Poisoning Ahead of Elections

**New Delhi, January 28, 2025** – Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and her Punjab counterpart, Bhagwant Mann, met with Election Commission (EC) officials today, alleging that the BJP-led Haryana government is intentionally releasing high levels of ammonia into the Yamuna River, jeopardizing Delhi’s water supply.

The AAP leaders claim ammonia levels have reached 7 ppm, exceeding Delhi’s water treatment plants’ capacity. Atishi stated that they presented their concerns to the EC, which will hear Haryana’s response before making a decision. Mann demanded immediate action, including supplemental water from the Munak canal to offset the contaminated Yamuna water. The EC will also review ammonia levels from the previous year.

This accusation follows a statement by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who on Monday accused Haryana of engaging in “biological warfare” by poisoning the Yamuna River. He claimed this action could cause widespread illness and death among Delhi’s residents.

While Atishi cited Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini’s acknowledgement of elevated ammonia levels and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO Shilpa Shinde’s confirmation, Shinde later refuted the AAP’s claims as factually incorrect.

This water crisis has become a major political flashpoint ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, with the AAP and BJP engaged in a heated exchange of accusations. The EC is currently reviewing data and will hear arguments from both sides, leaving the resolution of this crisis uncertain.
