Tue Jan 28 12:11:39 IST 2025: ## Delhi Accuses Haryana of Water Terrorism Ahead of Elections
**New Delhi** – Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has accused the Haryana government of “water terrorism,” alleging that the deliberate release of untreated sewage and industrial waste into the Yamuna River has caused dangerously high ammonia levels, impacting Delhi’s water supply and potentially jeopardizing the upcoming elections.
In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Atishi detailed how ammonia levels in the Yamuna, entering Delhi from Haryana, have surged to over 7 parts per million (ppm) – seven times the treatable limit of 1 ppm for Delhi’s water treatment plants. This has resulted in a 15-20% reduction in water supply, affecting approximately 3.4 million Delhi residents. High ammonia levels pose serious health risks, including kidney damage and respiratory distress.
Atishi claims that Haryana’s actions are a deliberate attempt to disrupt the elections. She described the situation as “water terrorism” intended to sabotage the free and fair conduct of the polls and requested an urgent meeting with the CEC to address the issue. She has also taken to social media to highlight the severe health risks posed by the contaminated water.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini dismissed the allegations, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of mismanagement and blaming others for their failures. He challenged the AAP to collaborate on water quality checks at the point of entry into Delhi. The dispute highlights the escalating tension between the two states ahead of the elections. The CEC is now expected to intervene in this critical matter.
