Tue Jan 28 12:12:31 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Adopt Uniform Civil Code

**Dehradun, India –** Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to officially adopt a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a move lauded by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami as a significant step towards ensuring equal rights for all citizens. The UCC, implemented via a newly launched online portal, aims to replace existing personal laws perceived as discriminatory and outdated.

CM Dhami hailed the initiative as a victory for social justice and women’s empowerment, specifically highlighting the UCC’s potential to end practices like “halala” and “iddat.” He described the adoption as a precedent-setting event that could inspire similar reforms across the nation.

However, the implementation has been met with immediate opposition. The Muslim Sewa Sangthan, Tanzeem-e-Rahnuma-e-Millat, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind have announced their intention to challenge the UCC in court. While Goa has a pre-independence UCC in place, Uttarakhand is the first BJP-ruled state to enact a new, comprehensive UCC. The long-term impact of this landmark decision and the ensuing legal challenges remain to be seen.
