**Dehradun, India** – In a landmark decision, Uttarakhand has become the first Indian state to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the initiative on Monday, establishing a single set of rules governing personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships, replacing the previously diverse religious personal laws.
The UCC aims to promote equality and streamline governance by creating a uniform legal framework for all citizens regardless of religious affiliation. A dedicated portal, ucc.uk.gov.in, has been launched, offering services in 23 languages. Residents can register marriages, divorces, live-in relationships, and wills both online and offline, with Aadhaar authentication required for online registration. The portal also allows users to file complaints and appeals.
The new code prioritizes the protection of personal rights and provides a clear, consistent legal framework for civil matters. The government emphasizes the ease of access and multilingual nature of the portal to ensure inclusivity. Further details regarding the implementation and specific provisions of the UCC are available on the official website.
