**Dehradun, Uttarakhand –** Uttarakhand today became the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a significant step towards standardizing personal laws across all religions. The code, which applies to all residents except those belonging to Scheduled Tribes, covers marriage, divorce, and property rights.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the implementation, calling it a fulfillment of a key BJP election promise from the 2022 assembly elections. The CM stated that the UCC ensures equal constitutional and civil rights for all citizens regardless of their religious affiliation. He further highlighted that this achievement joins other key BJP policy goals, including the revocation of Article 370, the criminalization of triple talaq, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
The official notification, accompanying rules and regulations, and a new online portal for mandatory registration of marriages, divorces, and live-in relationships were launched today. Chief Minister Dhami himself was the first to register his marriage on the new portal. The implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand is expected to spark debate and discussion nationwide regarding its potential nationwide adoption.
