Tue Jan 28 16:10:00 IST 2025: ## High Winds and Heavy Snow Slam Northern US

**Buffalo, NY –** A powerful winter storm is bringing a blizzard of snow and dangerously high winds to a 700-mile stretch of the Northern US, impacting millions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories for nearly 28 million people from Chicago and Milwaukee eastward through parts of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York.

The storm, fueled by a series of fast-moving clipper systems originating in Canada, is delivering potent snow showers and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The strongest clipper hit Monday night, creating near-whiteout conditions and posing a significant risk of downed trees and power outages, particularly impacting portions of Interstates 90 and 81.

The NWS warned of continued snow squalls through Tuesday and Wednesday, with the eastern Great Lakes and New England, including parts of the northern mid-Atlantic, under a high risk. Erie, Pennsylvania, already burdened with over 92 inches of snow this winter, is bracing for more. Buffalo and Watertown, New York, are also expected to see significant snowfall.

While the intensity of snowfall depends on the speed of the clipper system, the NWS stresses the potential for dangerous whiteout conditions and significant travel disruptions. A second clipper system is expected mid-week, potentially bringing light-to-moderate snow to areas including Boston and New York City. However, depending on its trajectory, upper Michigan and western/upstate New York could again face heavy snow and high winds. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and monitor weather reports closely.
