**NEW YORK** – Sterling K. Brown, beloved for his emotionally resonant role in “This Is Us,” is taking on a new challenge: a sci-fi thriller. In Hulu’s “Paradise,” created by his “This Is Us” collaborator Dan Fogelman, Brown plays a stoic Secret Service agent protecting the President – a role vastly different from his previous, more openly emotional character.
The new series, which premiered Sunday, sees Brown’s character, Xavier, grappling with the murder of the President (James Marsden) in a strangely unsettling, almost idyllic setting. While acknowledging that some fans may miss the familiar emotional depth of his “This Is Us” character, Randall, Brown hopes viewers will embrace this new, more reserved portrayal.
“I’m sure there’ll be about 12 percent of people who are like, ‘This ain’t Randall, what’s going on?’” Brown stated. He expressed confidence that the pilot will draw viewers in regardless, promising a compelling mystery within a unique sci-fi context.
The reunion between Brown and Fogelman marks a homecoming of sorts, bringing back numerous crew members from their award-winning NBC drama. “Paradise” represents a departure from the weepy family drama that made them both famous, but retains the collaborative chemistry that garnered them nine Emmy nominations between them. This new venture promises a thrilling departure for both the actors and fans alike.
