Tue Jan 28 08:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Gale Warnings Issued for Nine States as Severe Weather Threatens Maritime Travel

**Chicago, IL – January 27, 2024** – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued gale warnings for waters off nine states, urging mariners to remain in port due to hazardous conditions. Strong winds, high waves, and reduced visibility pose significant dangers to both recreational and commercial vessels.

The warnings, effective until at least January 28th, and extending to January 29th in some areas, cover New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Maine, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 50 knots (58 mph), with waves as high as 18 feet in some locations.

The NWS has issued specific warnings for several regions: Long Island Sound and waters from Sandy Hook, NJ to Montauk, NY; the Lake Michigan coast from St. Joseph to Pentwater; coastal and intracoastal waters off Maine; nearshore areas from Winthrop Harbor, Illinois to Michigan City, Indiana; Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, and Massachusetts Bay; and Lake Erie from Vermilion, Ohio to Buffalo, New York. In addition to gale warnings, some areas, such as the Lake Erie region, are also under winter weather advisories.

A gale warning is defined as sustained winds or frequent gusts between 34 and 47 knots. The NWS urges all boaters to monitor weather updates closely and avoid travel until conditions improve. The storm system is expected to weaken by mid-week, with conditions potentially improving by late January 29th.
