**Harpalpur, Uttar Pradesh:** A special train carrying pilgrims to the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj was attacked with stones at Harpalpur railway station early this morning, leaving passengers terrified and the train with shattered windows. Videos circulating on social media show stones being hurled at the train as passengers inside scream.
The incident occurred around 2 am after the train, which departed Jhansi around 8 pm yesterday, arrived at Harpalpur. According to passengers and police, a large crowd waiting to board the train found the doors locked. This sparked outrage, leading to the violent attack. One passenger recounted the incident, stating that the attackers “tried to kill passengers,” including women and children.
Harpalpur police station in-charge Pushpak Sharma confirmed the stone-pelting incident. Railway spokesperson Manoj Singh stated that the crowd became agitated after being unable to board the locked train. Railway police were dispatched to the scene, eventually calming the situation and ensuring the passengers continued their journey.
Singh appealed for cooperation from passengers to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing the railways’ efforts to provide special trains for the Mahakumbh Mela. The extent of damage to the train and whether any injuries were sustained is yet to be confirmed. Investigations into the incident are underway.
