Tue Jan 28 10:16:47 UTC 2025: ## Kannur Panchayat Employees Protest Death Threats from CPI(M) Leaders

**Kannur, Kerala –** Employees of the Pinarayi panchayat office in Kannur staged a silent protest on Tuesday, alleging they received death threats from local CPI(M) leaders for complying with a Kerala High Court order.

The threats, reportedly issued on January 24th by local CPI(M) secretary Nandanan and committee member Nikhil, followed the employees’ removal of roadside flex boards, flags, and flagpoles as per the court order. The alleged threats included violent bodily harm.

The employees, many of whom belong to Left-leaning organizations, claim that the High Court order, discussed and agreed upon at an all-party meeting including CPI(M) representatives, was necessary for public safety and to alleviate traffic obstruction. They stated that non-compliance would have resulted in fines for the panchayat secretary.

While a silent demonstration was held with employees covering their mouths and holding placards, no formal complaint has yet been filed with the police. The panchayat administrative committee held an emergency meeting to address the situation, and while Pinarayi police confirmed the protest, they reported no complaint had been lodged. The incident highlights the tension between local party politics and the implementation of court orders.
