Tue Jan 28 16:01:35 IST 2025: ## Delhi Riots Accused, AIMIM Candidate Granted Parole to Campaign

**NEW DELHI** – Tahir Hussain, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots and the AIMIM’s candidate for the Mustafabad constituency, has been granted a six-day parole by the Supreme Court to campaign in the upcoming elections. The court’s decision, reached by a three-judge bench after a previous split verdict, allows Hussain to campaign from January 29th to February 3rd, from sunrise to sunset.

Hussain, a former AAP councillor, faces charges including murder, rioting, and public mischief, related to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. He is a key accused in the primary conspiracy case surrounding the riots, which resulted in the death of Intelligence Bureau official Ankit Sharma. He was expelled from AAP following the riots and joined the AIMIM last year.

The parole comes with stringent conditions. Hussain must pay a significant sum of Rs 2 lakh per day for security arrangements, is prohibited from visiting his home in Karawal Nagar, and is barred from making any statements related to the ongoing riot cases. He may, however, visit the AIMIM party office. The court explicitly stated that this decision should not be considered a precedent for future cases.

The Additional Solicitor General opposed the parole, arguing it would set a dangerous precedent. The Supreme Court’s decision follows a split verdict from a previous two-judge bench, necessitating referral to a larger bench.

Hussain will be contesting against AAP’s Adeel Ahmed Khan, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht, and Congress’s Ali Mahndi in the Mustafabad constituency, previously held by AAP’s Haji Yunus.
