Tue Jan 28 10:07:20 UTC 2025: ## Photographer’s Exhibit Showcases the Enduring Spirit of Uttarakhand’s Jaunsari Tribe

**Mumbai, January 28, 2025** – A poignant new photography exhibition, “I Am Jaunsari,” opens at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai on January 29th. The exhibit, by Pune-based photographer Nitin Joshi, offers a deeply personal exploration of the Jaunsari tribe in Uttarakhand, a community facing the erosion of its heritage and traditions due to migration.

Joshi, whose family migrated from the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand in the 1980s, embarked on this project in 2014 to document and preserve the unique culture of his ancestral tribe. His photographs depict the daily lives of Jaunsari villagers, showcasing their traditional agricultural practices, customs, and the stunning landscapes they call home.

The exhibition highlights the challenges faced by the Jaunsari community, with younger generations migrating to cities in search of better opportunities, leaving behind the elders who strive to maintain their cultural heritage. Joshi’s work aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural identity in the face of modernization.

“This exhibition is more than just a documentation,” Joshi explains. “It’s a celebration of heritage and an urgent reminder of the fragility of cultural identities.” He hopes the photographs will inspire viewers to connect with their own roots and appreciate the richness of diverse communities.

“I Am Jaunsari” runs until February 4th, offering a compelling visual narrative of resilience, tradition, and the enduring spirit of a community grappling with change. The exhibit is open from 11 am to 7 pm daily at the Jehangir Art Gallery.
