**New Delhi, January 28, 2025** – The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka after its navy opened fire on Indian fishermen near Delft Island in the Palk Strait on Tuesday. The attack left two fishermen seriously injured and three others with minor wounds.
Thirteen Indian fishermen were apprehended during the incident. The two critically injured fishermen are receiving treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, where Indian consulate officials have provided assistance.
The MEA summoned Sri Lanka’s Acting High Commissioner to formally protest the use of force. The Indian High Commission in Colombo also raised the matter with Sri Lankan authorities.
The MEA declared that the use of force against fishermen is unacceptable and called for humane treatment, considering the livelihood concerns of the fishermen. The ministry also stressed the need for strict adherence to existing bilateral agreements on fishing activities in the Palk Strait region.
