Tue Jan 28 10:58:54 UTC 2025: ## Central Team Deployed to Pune Amidst Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak
**Pune, Maharashtra:** A surge in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, Maharashtra, has prompted the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to deploy a high-level multidisciplinary team to assist state health officials. Over 100 suspected and confirmed cases have been reported in recent days.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and sometimes paralysis. While usually manageable with early treatment, some patients may experience long-term weakness.
The central team, comprising seven experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, the regional health and family welfare office, and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, will work alongside state health departments to assess the situation and recommend necessary public health interventions. Three NIV Pune experts were already assisting local authorities; this expanded team aims to develop a more effective strategy to combat the outbreak. The Ministry is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with the state government.
