Tue Jan 28 21:51:32 IST 2025: ## Kochi Battles Dengue and Leptospirosis Outbreak

**KOCHI, January 28, 2025** – Ernakulam district in Kochi is grappling with a significant outbreak of dengue and leptospirosis, resulting in four deaths since January 1st. Three of the fatalities were attributed to dengue, according to official figures released on January 26th. The victims ranged in age from 47 to 65 years old and hailed from various areas across the district. One individual also tested positive for Hepatitis A.

Over 350 confirmed and suspected dengue cases have been reported across the district in the past three and a half weeks, with an average of nearly 13 cases daily. The highest number of cases, 26, were reported on January 4th and 14th. Affected areas include both urban centers within the Kochi Corporation and rural regions.

The district has also seen a concerning number of leptospirosis cases, with nearly 36 confirmed and suspected instances since January 1st.

T.K. Asharaf, chairperson of the Corporation Standing Committee on Health, stated that fogging and larvicide spraying are ongoing across all divisions, with intensified efforts in areas experiencing spikes in dengue cases. He confirmed that each division possesses adequate equipment for these preventative measures.

The health authorities are actively addressing the outbreak, but the increasing number of cases remains a significant public health concern.
