**Salem, Tamil Nadu, January 28, 2025** – An 82-year-old farmer, Sarath Chandran, was found dead on Tuesday following an alleged assault by his nephew and the nephew’s wife. Police have arrested Punniyamoorthy (61) and his wife, Lakshmi, in connection with the death.
Chandran had bequeathed his property to Punniyamoorthy in exchange for a monthly allowance of ₹20,000. A dispute arose on Monday night over the payment of this allowance, escalating into a violent attack where the couple allegedly beat Chandran with wooden logs.
Initially, Punniyamoorthy and Lakshmi claimed Chandran died after falling from his bed. However, suspicious relatives alerted the Kolathur police, leading to an investigation. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and police have registered a case against the couple for murder. The investigation is ongoing.
