**KOCHI, January 28, 2025** – The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has formally requested the Seventh State Finance Commission to grant it metropolitan development authority status and the power to issue municipal bonds. This request, made during a meeting chaired by Commission Chairman K.N. Harilal, aims to bolster the GCDA’s capacity for regional development.

GCDA Chairman K. Chandran Pillai highlighted the authority’s ongoing projects and emphasized the need for enhanced powers to effectively manage future development. He argued that metropolitan status and the ability to issue bonds would significantly improve project implementation. Mr. Pillai also appealed for government grants to support public infrastructure projects, transit-oriented development (TOD) initiatives, and land pooling schemes. He further suggested the appointment of a finance officer to strengthen fiscal management.

Commission Chairman Harilal indicated that the GCDA’s requests would receive due consideration.
