DETROIT — The Detroit Lions have promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, the team announced today. Sheppard, 37, who played seven games for the Lions in 2018, has been with the team since 2021, overseeing the linebackers. His promotion follows the departure of Aaron Glenn, who accepted the head coaching position with the New York Jets.
Sheppard, known for his intense coaching style and strong player relationships, was considered the frontrunner for the position. Glenn himself had publicly mentored Sheppard, stating in December that Sheppard was “damn near close if not ready” to lead a defense. Sheppard’s coaching has been credited with the development of players like Jack Campbell and Alex Anzalone.
While the Lions interviewed former Buccaneers linebackers coach Larry Foote, they ultimately opted to keep the position within the organization. This continues a trend for head coach Dan Campbell, who has a history of promoting from within. Campbell previously worked with Sheppard in Miami, and also shares past associations with his current offensive and previous defensive coordinators.
The Lions have experienced significant staff turnover since their playoff exit last week, losing five assistant coaches to other teams, including offensive coordinator Ben Johnson (Chicago Bears) and defensive line coach Terrell Williams (New England Patriots). The team is expected to fill its offensive coordinator vacancy internally as well. Despite the losses, the Lions are clearly emphasizing internal growth and continuity in their coaching structure. Players like Jack Campbell have expressed strong confidence in Sheppard’s abilities and leadership.
