Mon Jan 27 19:58:28 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand Launches Uniform Civil Code, Chief Minister First to Register
**Dehradun, India –** Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Monday, January 27th. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spearheaded the initiative, becoming the first person to register on the newly launched online portal for marriage, divorce, and live-in relationship registrations under the new law.
The UCC, aimed at creating a single set of laws applicable to all citizens regardless of religion, was unveiled by CM Dhami at his official residence. He emphasized that the code is not intended to target any specific religion but rather to eliminate discriminatory practices and protect the rights of women and children. The implementation fulfills a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 Assembly elections.
The UCC’s development involved the formation of an expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, which submitted a draft that was subsequently passed by the state assembly and received presidential assent. The Chief Minister attributed the successful implementation to the people of Uttarakhand. The code is based on Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, which envisions a uniform civil code for all citizens.
