Mon Jan 27 22:46:04 UTC 2025: ## Mexico Receives Thousands of US Deportations Amid Trump’s Renewed Hardline Stance

**Mexico City** – Mexico has received over 4,000 deportees from the United States in the first week of Donald Trump’s second term, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday. While the majority are Mexican citizens, the figure includes individuals from other countries. Sheinbaum emphasized that this influx doesn’t represent a significant increase in non-Mexican arrivals.

The announcement comes amidst heightened tensions in Latin America following Trump’s aggressive stance on immigration and his “America First” foreign policy. A significant clash with Colombia over the acceptance of deportees on military flights resulted in threatened trade tariffs before a last-minute agreement. Reports also suggest Mexico initially refused a US military deportation flight last week, though details remain unclear.

While Sheinbaum has previously criticized “unilateral deportations,” she acknowledged historical precedent for accepting non-Mexican deportees, citing agreements under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. These included a deal with the Biden administration to accept thousands of migrants from various countries and the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy during Trump’s first term, which required asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while awaiting US hearings. Trump intends to reinstate this policy.

Although Sheinbaum hasn’t explicitly endorsed Trump’s proposals, she hinted at potential agreements to manage the flow of non-Mexican deportees, noting ongoing diplomatic discussions. The Mexican government has launched a repatriation program, “Mexico Embraces You,” to support returning citizens.

The White House, however, has portrayed the situation with Colombia and Mexico as demonstrations of US strength. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt boasted about Colombia’s acceptance of deportation terms and claimed Mexico accepted a record number of deportation flights in one day, though these claims have not been independently verified.

Despite the apparent cooperation, the use of military flights and reported handcuffing of deportees have drawn criticism from other nations, including Brazil, which condemned the practice as a human rights violation. Trump has warned that his actions against Colombia are merely the beginning of his renewed immigration crackdown. The situation continues to fuel concern about rising tensions and potential humanitarian crises in the region.
