CHENNAI, January 28, 2025 – A vibrant exhibition titled “Transit…From the Studio” opened today at the Lalit Kala Akademi in Egmore, showcasing the work of Chennai-based artist Gita Hudson. The exhibition features over 90 canvases dominated by various shades of red, interspersed with black and grey, reflecting Hudson’s two-decade-long journey with abstract art.
The collection includes not only paintings but also moving images and installations, demonstrating Hudson’s experimental approach. One notable piece is a butterfly crafted from old DVDs, a unique tribute to her late husband, a collector of world films and music. The DVDs, now rendered obsolete, were repurposed into art, preserving a part of her husband’s legacy. The exhibition also features works from her folk deities and temple series.
Hudson, who was inspired by the works of masters like Raza, Gaitonde, and Achuthan Kudallur, explained that her exploration of abstract art began in 1999, at a time before the constant barrage of imagery prevalent in today’s world. She finds musicality in the textures and flow of colors in her work, often working within a specific palette, though acknowledging that the prevalence of red can sometimes be tiring.
The exhibition, which runs until January 31st, also includes re-edited film loops created by Hudson, specifically for the benefit of young students. It offers a comprehensive look at the artist’s evolution and her unique artistic vision.
