Tue Jan 28 11:13:58 UTC 2025: ## Bangladesh Risks Return to Rights Abuses, Warns HRW

**DHAKA** – Human Rights Watch (HRW) has warned that Bangladesh risks a return to the human rights abuses prevalent under ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unless the interim government implements sweeping reforms. In a report released Monday, the NGO highlighted ongoing arbitrary arrests and reprisal violence, stating that the current situation threatens to undo the progress made in ending abuses under Hasina’s 15-year rule.

The report criticizes the police for reverting to abusive tactics, including pressuring families of those killed during anti-government protests to sign case documents without full knowledge of the accusations. At least 140 journalists perceived as supporting Hasina’s government are facing murder charges. HRW also noted that nearly 1,000 Bangladeshis died fighting for democracy, creating a crucial opportunity for lasting reform that could be squandered.

HRW urged the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, to establish legal detention practices, repeal laws used to target critics, and focus reforms on the separation of powers and ensuring political neutrality across state institutions. While acknowledging initial reform efforts, HRW emphasized the need for structural changes resilient to future repression. The organization recommended seeking assistance from UN rights experts to ensure lasting impact.

The interim government has yet to respond to the report. While Yunus has acknowledged inheriting a “completely broken-down” system and pledged to unite the country, he has also stated that those who committed wrongdoing under Hasina’s administration will be held accountable. The situation highlights a critical juncture for Bangladesh, where the success of ongoing reforms will determine whether the country can consolidate its democratic gains and prevent a return to past abuses.
