Tue Jan 28 15:28:36 UTC 2025: ## Kolkata Book Fair Opens Amidst Notable Absence
**KOLKATA, INDIA –** The 48th International Kolkata Book Fair opened Tuesday with a record number of stalls but a significant absence: Bangladesh, a longtime participant since 1996, did not attend this year. This omission sparked concern among publishers and writers, who highlighted the deep cultural and literary ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh. The absence was described as a “sorry development” and a “violation of freedom of expression” by several commentators.
This year’s fair features Germany as the focal theme country, celebrated for its long-standing relationship with India and its pioneering role in the book fair world. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted the historical connection between Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Germany during the inauguration ceremony. German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann praised Kolkata as the “intellectual and artistic heart of India” and lauded the book fair as a “Kumbh mela, Bengali style.”
The fair, which boasts over 1,000 stalls from countries including Argentina, Spain, Peru, the U.S., the U.K., France, Russia, and Nepal, is expected to draw a massive crowd. CM Banerjee predicted attendance exceeding 50 lakh (5 million) this year, surpassing last year’s 27 lakh and ₹30 crore (₹300 million) in business. Eminent writer Abul Bashar received a Lifetime Achievement award.
To accommodate the anticipated large turnout, the Metro Railway is increasing train services and Bharti Airtel is providing enhanced connectivity at the fairgrounds. The fair will run until February 9th. The Hindu Group will also have a presence at the fair.
