Mon Jan 27 19:21:30 UTC 2025: ## Minimally Invasive Mastectomy Offers Hope for Breast Cancer Patients

**Chennai, January 28, 2025** – Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) announced a successful minimally invasive endoscopic mastectomy with breast reconstruction on a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. The procedure, which preserves the nipple and areola, offers a less invasive alternative to traditional mastectomies.

Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon Dr. Manjula Rao explained that while breast conservation is ideal, some patients require mastectomy. In such cases, skin and nipple-sparing techniques are employed, with reconstruction options including implants or the patient’s own tissue. The decision is based on tumor size and involvement of the breast skin or nipple. While nipple preservation is the goal, it’s contingent on cancer-free tissue tests.

Dr. Rao emphasized that cancer control remains paramount, with cosmetic outcomes a secondary consideration. In this case, the smaller tumor size allowed for a procedure balancing effective cancer treatment with a positive cosmetic result.

Dinesh Madhavan, President of Group Oncology at Apollo Hospitals, stressed the importance of raising awareness about advancements in breast cancer treatment and the vital role of early detection. The successful surgery at APCC highlights the growing availability of less invasive options for breast cancer patients seeking both effective treatment and improved cosmetic outcomes.
