Tue Jan 28 10:59:13 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Implement Uniform Civil Code, Facing Immediate Legal Challenge

**Dehradun, India** – Uttarakhand has become the first Indian state to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a move that has sparked immediate controversy and legal challenges. The BJP government, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced the implementation on Monday. Dhami stated that the UCC ensures equal constitutional and civil rights for all citizens regardless of religion.

However, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, a prominent Muslim organization, has vowed to challenge the law in court. The organization claims the UCC violates citizens’ religious freedom and is discriminatory. Maulana Arshad Madani, under whose guidance the legal challenge will be pursued, stated that Muslims cannot compromise their Sharia law. He emphasized that while Muslims may compromise on other matters, their religious law is non-negotiable.

Protests erupted across Uttarakhand on Monday, with large numbers of Muslims from various service organizations taking to the streets. They denounced the UCC as an imposed law, a violation of their constitutional rights, and threatened road blockades in protest. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s legal team is already investigating the constitutional and legal aspects of the UCC to prepare for legal action in the Uttarakhand High Court and the Supreme Court.
