Tue Jan 28 05:59:25 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code Sees First Registrations

**Dehradun, India** – The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand has facilitated its first registrations, marking a significant milestone in the state’s legal landscape. Among the initial five marriages registered under the new code is that of Anjali Verma, 26, who married nine months ago. Verma, an employee at the state’s Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA), completed the online registration process via the recently launched UCC portal on Monday.

The process involved submitting documentation including addresses, birth certificates, Aadhaar and PAN cards, and requiring two witnesses (or parents/guardians) to appear via live video on the portal. Verma received confirmation of registration via SMS on Monday morning. She highlighted the streamlining of the process compared to previous methods, such as obtaining a passport, which previously involved lengthy court procedures and legal representation. The UCC registration fee was just ₹250.

Another woman, Nikita Negi Rawat, also registered her marriage, which had previously been registered under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Marriage Registration Act of 2010 (in 2017). Her marriage took place in 2013. The UCC portal allows individuals who previously registered their marriages under other acts to register them under the UCC by submitting necessary documents. Rawat successfully completed the online process and received approval on Monday morning.
