Mon Jan 27 05:54:58 UTC 2025: ## Congress Condemns Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code Pilot Project
**New Delhi, January 27, 2025** – The Congress party has criticized the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand, calling it a premature “pilot project” lacking proper consensus. The UCC, set to take effect in Uttarakhand on January 27th, will make it the first state in India to adopt such a law.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi stated that the very definition of a “uniform” civil code precludes state-specific variations. He questioned the logic of implementing a supposedly uniform law differently across various states. Singhvi argued that the Uttarakhand initiative is a rushed attempt to establish a precedent before achieving nationwide consensus.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, however, defended the implementation, asserting that all necessary preparations, including rule approvals and official training, have been completed. He framed the UCC as a contribution to the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed and harmonious India, highlighting its role in ensuring equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens. The BJP’s successful 2022 election campaign in Uttarakhand heavily featured the promise of UCC implementation.
