Mon Jan 27 14:01:16 IST 2025: ## Uttarakhand Launches Uniform Civil Code

**Dehradun, January 27, 2025** – Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today launched a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, marking a significant step in implementing uniform laws governing personal matters across all religions. A dedicated portal was also unveiled to facilitate the implementation process.

The new UCC mandates a minimum marriageable age of 21 for men and 18 for women, regardless of religious affiliation. Other key provisions include equal property rights for women, mandatory registration of live-in relationships with equal property rights for children born from such relationships, and compulsory registration of births, deaths, and marriages.

Addressing the launch event, CM Dhami emphasized that the UCC is not discriminatory towards any religion but aims to ensure equal treatment for all citizens irrespective of religion, caste, or gender. He cited examples of Muslim-majority nations that have similar laws. He also announced that January 27th will be observed annually as UCC Day in Uttarakhand.

Importantly, Mr. Dhami stated that tribal communities will be exempted from the UCC to preserve their traditional customs and cultural practices. The Congress party has criticized the move, describing it as a poorly conceived pilot project lacking proper consensus.
