**Washington, D.C. –** President Donald Trump has authorized the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, reversing a decision made by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Biden had halted the shipment in May 2024 to mitigate civilian casualties during the conflict in Gaza. Trump announced the resumption on his Truth Social network, stating that weapons “ordered and paid for by Israel, but not sent by Biden,” were now en route. A Trump administration official confirmed this, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The 2,000-pound bombs were part of a larger shipment that also included 1,700 500-pound bombs, the latter of which were delivered weeks after the initial pause. Biden’s justification for halting the delivery was to prevent the use of these weapons in an all-out assault on Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. While Israel did eventually take control of Rafah, the majority of its civilian population had already fled.
Trump’s decision comes five days into his presidency and amidst a tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. While the first phase of the ceasefire has seen the release of some hostages, the more difficult negotiations for the release of all hostages and a lasting peace remain. The Israeli government has warned of resuming hostilities if all hostages are not released.
