**Hyderabad:** The Telangana High Court has directed the state government to include landless agricultural laborers residing within municipalities in the Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa scheme within four weeks. The order comes after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by G. Srinivas of Narayanpet, alleging discrimination against these laborers.
The petitioner argued that while the scheme, which provides an annual assistance of ₹12,000 to landless agricultural laborers, covers those in rural areas, it excludes a significant population in the state’s 129 municipalities. His lawyer, Chikkudu Prabhakar, informed the court that over 800,000 landless agricultural laborers live in municipal areas and are being denied the benefits. He contended that excluding them is discriminatory and violates Supreme Court rulings on equal treatment.
The High Court agreed, issuing orders to the Chief Secretary to ensure the scheme’s extension to include all eligible landless agricultural laborers, regardless of their location. The court’s intervention ensures that the benefits of the Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa scheme reach all intended beneficiaries across the state.
