**Madurai, January 27, 2025** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has been assured that streetlights will be installed along the Fatima College-Samayanallur road in Madurai within the next two months. This follows a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in 2023 by N. Senthil Kumar, who highlighted safety concerns due to inadequate lighting on the stretch.
During a hearing on Monday, the Madurai Corporation informed the court that streetlight installation within city limits will be completed within this timeframe. Authorities stated that a high-level committee meeting will soon determine plans for the remaining portion of the road, with work expected to commence shortly thereafter.
Mr. Kumar’s petition also called for improved safety measures, including medians, reflective signboards, a ban on postering on signboards and zebra crossing defacement, standardized speed breakers, and proper lighting on both sides of the highway. The court adjourned the hearing until January 31st.
