**Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (January 27, 2025)** — The eastern Congolese city of Goma is facing a major crisis as M23 rebels, backed by Rwandan forces, have advanced to the outskirts, forcing thousands to flee and triggering a significant humanitarian emergency. The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Sunday in response to the escalating conflict.
The M23 offensive, which has gained significant ground in recent weeks, resulted in the rebels seizing control of the Munigi quarter, just 9 kilometers from Goma. This caused widespread panic and a mass exodus of civilians. The airport is now closed, severely hampering evacuation and humanitarian efforts. UN Special Representative for Congo, Bintu Keita, described the situation as a “trap,” with the UN temporarily relocating non-essential personnel.
The fighting has already claimed the lives of at least 13 peacekeepers, including two from South Africa and one from Uruguay. Eleven more peacekeepers were injured. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the M23 offensive and called for an immediate halt to hostilities and a withdrawal of forces.
The Congolese government has severed diplomatic ties with Rwanda, accusing it of supporting the M23 rebels. Rwanda denies these accusations but acknowledges having troops in eastern Congo for security reasons. The Congolese Foreign Ministry has recalled all its diplomatic staff from Rwanda.
The crisis has deepened an already dire humanitarian situation. Over 21 million people in Congo require aid, and the escalating violence threatens to worsen the crisis considerably. The UN has released $17 million from its emergency fund to address the immediate needs. The fighting has also displaced thousands of people who sought refuge in Goma and neighboring areas, further straining resources. The UN deputy humanitarian chief, Joyce Msuya, warned that if the fighting reaches Goma, the impact on civilians would be devastating. The situation remains tense as the world watches the unfolding crisis with concern.
