**Kolkata, January 27, 2025** – The Calcutta High Court commenced hearings on Monday on appeals filed by the West Bengal government and the CBI challenging the life imprisonment sentence given to Sanjay Roy, convicted in the R.G. Kar hospital rape-murder case. Both appellants argue the sentence is inadequate and seek the death penalty.
The CBI contends it has the right to appeal due to its role in investigating and prosecuting the case, a right it distinguishes from that of the state government. Advocate General Kishore Dutta, representing the West Bengal government, argued that the state also possesses the right to appeal the trial court’s judgment. The hearing is before a division bench headed by Justice Debangsu Basak. The Sealdah sessions court had originally sentenced Roy to life imprisonment until death.
