Mon Jan 27 01:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Fast Food Concerns in Kadapa: Health Officials Warn of Cancer-Causing Chemicals
**Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh:** Health officials in Kadapa are sounding the alarm about the potentially dangerous levels of chemicals in popular fast foods, particularly Pani Puri, Gobi Manchurian, noodles, fried rice, and chicken kabab. Following similar findings in neighboring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where authorities have even imposed restrictions on some Chinese fast-food outlets, local officials are urging residents to exercise caution.
Laboratory tests in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu revealed high levels of cancer-causing chemicals in samples of these foods, with further concerns raised about the negative impact on women’s reproductive health. These chemicals are often added to enhance color and flavor. Studies have also identified harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and Klebsiella, in the Pani Puri water itself. The excessive use of oil, maida (refined flour), and flavor enhancers in these dishes is also linked to illnesses like typhoid and kidney problems.
The frequent consumption of these foods can lead to a range of health issues, including asthma, allergies, skin rashes, heart problems, kidney disease, and weakened immunity. While the Kadapa Food Safety Department exists, officials are criticized for a lack of inspections and enforcement of regulations. The local municipal corporation is also being criticized for inaction.
District Food Safety Inspector Shamsheer acknowledged the use of Ajinomoto (MSG) and artificial colors in these foods, stating that exceeding safe limits poses significant health risks. While awareness programs are being conducted, the lack of proactive enforcement remains a key concern, leaving the public’s health at risk. Officials have pledged to increase inspections in the future.
