**GAZA CITY** – Thousands of Palestinians began returning to their homes in northern Gaza on Monday, marking a significant step in the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. After 15 months of conflict that claimed the lives of at least 47,306 Palestinians, according to Palestinian sources, and resulted in the displacement of approximately 90% of Gaza’s population, the Israeli military opened the Netzarim Corridor, allowing residents to access the heavily damaged area.
The return followed a delay linked to the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas. Qatar mediated the agreement, securing the release of Israeli captive Arbel Yehud and two others, paving the way for the resumption of the repatriation process. Hamas hailed the return as a victory, highlighting the resilience of the Palestinian people.
Palestinians, many carrying their belongings in sacks and plastic bags, walked through the corridor, expressing both relief and determination to rebuild their lives. One resident, speaking to Al Jazeera, vowed to reconstruct their home “brick by brick, wall by wall.” Al Jazeera reporters described a palpable sense of joy and excitement among the returning residents.
However, the return is bittersweet. Northern Gaza has been devastated by the conflict, leaving residents facing the monumental task of rebuilding amidst the rubble. Experts expressed cautious optimism, noting that while the return is a positive development, the long-term implications remain uncertain, particularly regarding Israel’s intentions for the region. Concerns persist about the extent of rebuilding efforts that will be allowed.
The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in a high death toll on both sides. While Israel reported at least 1,139 deaths and over 200 captives, Palestinian sources claim the death toll in Gaza is significantly higher than officially reported, with many bodies still being recovered from the rubble. The return of thousands to their ravaged homes underscores the immense humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold in Gaza.
