New Delhi, January 27, 2025 – The Indian government has proposed sweeping new rules to standardize timekeeping across the country, mandating the exclusive use of Indian Standard Time (IST) in all official and commercial contexts. The Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2024, currently open for public comment until February 14th, aim to create a uniform legal framework for timekeeping.
Key provisions of the draft rules include: the prohibition of using any time reference other than IST in official and commercial documents; the mandatory display of IST in all government offices and public institutions; and the requirement for reliable, available, and secure time-synchronization systems. The government cites the need for precise timekeeping, especially for critical national infrastructure like telecommunications, banking, and defense, as well as emerging technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence. A senior government official emphasized the importance of nanosecond accuracy for both strategic and non-strategic sectors.
While exceptions will be granted for specialized fields like astronomy, navigation, and scientific research (subject to government approval), the rules aim for widespread adoption of IST. The Department of Consumer Affairs is collaborating with the National Physical Laboratory and ISRO to develop a robust time dissemination system. Penalties will be imposed for violations, and periodic audits will ensure compliance. The public is invited to submit feedback on the draft rules before the February 14th deadline.
