Mon Jan 27 17:01:41 UTC 2025: ## Hobart Hurricanes Clinch Maiden Big Bash Title with Record-Breaking Win

**Hobart, Australia –** The Hobart Hurricanes have finally claimed their first Big Bash League (BBL) title, defeating the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in a thrilling final at Hobart on Monday. The victory was fueled by a breathtaking century from Mitchell Owen and a crucial three-wicket haul from captain Nathan Ellis.

Owen smashed a record-equalling 39-ball century, the joint-fastest in BBL history, laying the foundation for Hobart’s commanding chase. His innings, studded with six fours and eleven sixes, ultimately earned him the Player of the Match award. Owen’s exceptional performance capped off a stellar season where he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 452 runs.

The Thunder, winning the toss and electing to bat first, initially looked strong, with a 97-run opening partnership between captain David Warner (48) and Jason Sangha (67). However, Ellis’s timely intervention, claiming the key wickets of Warner and Sangha, stemmed the flow of runs. Riley Meredith also contributed significantly, taking three wickets as well. The Thunder eventually posted a competitive 182/7.

Hobart’s reply was explosive. Owen and Caleb Jewell provided a blistering start, accumulating 98 runs without loss in the powerplay. Owen’s assault was particularly brutal, smashing the fastest BBL fifty in just 16 balls. Although Tanveer Sangha briefly interrupted the onslaught with two wickets, Owen’s century, including a 20-run over, proved insurmountable. Despite Owen’s eventual dismissal, Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade guided Hobart to victory with ample time to spare.

This win marks a historic moment for the Hurricanes, who had previously reached the final twice without success. Their dominant performance in the final cemented their place as the new BBL champions.
