Mon Jan 27 15:50:00 IST 2025: ## Mets Face Difficult Decision: Will Franchise Star Pete Alonso Return?

**NEW YORK** – The New York Mets’ first fan event in five years was overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of star first baseman Pete Alonso, who remains unsigned as a free agent. Owner Steve Cohen, in a candid fireside chat, admitted the negotiations have been “exhausting” and described the proposed contract structures as “highly asymmetric” against the team. While Cohen hasn’t closed the door on a reunion, he indicated the Mets are moving forward, signing other players, making Alonso’s return increasingly less likely.

Alonso, represented by super-agent Scott Boras, reportedly initially sought a long-term deal but is now open to a three-year contract. The sticking point, according to Cohen, is the money. Boras countered that Alonso’s requests align with market standards for players of similar caliber.

The Mets have been busy bolstering their roster this offseason, adding players like Juan Soto, Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, and Frankie Montas to a team already including high-priced players. The team’s recent signings of Jesse Winker and A.J. Minter further suggest a shift in focus. In anticipation of Alonso’s potential departure, the team has begun preparing other players, including Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, to play first base. Veterans Jared Young and Joey Meneses are also being considered.

Despite the financial hurdles, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns expressed the organization’s appreciation for Alonso and acknowledged his right to explore his options as a free agent. Even veteran teammate Francisco Lindor, while admitting Alonso’s absence would be noticeable, urged patience and advised Alonso to prioritize his own best interests.

Alonso, a fan favorite who set a rookie record with 53 home runs in 2019, has become a cornerstone of the Mets since his debut in 2017. However, his defensive shortcomings and a recent decline in offensive production have complicated negotiations. The situation presents a stark contrast to the smooth contract extension secured by outfielder Brandon Nimmo (also represented by Boras) last offseason. As spring training approaches, the question remains: will the Mets and their beloved slugger find common ground, or will Alonso embark on a new chapter in his career elsewhere?
