**Kozhikode/Thiruvananthapuram, January 27, 2025** – The Kerala Forest Department confirmed the death of a tigress suspected of killing a 40-year-old coffee plantation worker, Radha, last week in Wayanad district. The animal, believed to be responsible for the attack, was found mortally wounded near Pilakavu around 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
The tigress, estimated to be 6-7 years old, sustained deep gashes to its neck and other injuries, possibly from a fight with another tiger. Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran stated that the department’s wildlife enforcers located the tiger after tracking it throughout the night using camera traps. While the initial plan was to tranquilize the animal, it was found dead. A necropsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The tigress’s death comes after an incident on Sunday where it attacked a member of a rapid response team deployed to capture it. The team member sustained minor injuries.
Minister Saseendran had previously announced on Friday that the tiger would be shot if capture attempts failed. This announcement followed intense protests in Mananthavady after Radha’s death. Radha, the wife of a temporary forest watchman, was attacked while working at a coffee plantation.
Despite the tigress’s death, the Forest Department plans to continue combing operations in other parts of Wayanad where tiger sightings have been reported. Searches will focus on at least four locations over the next few days.
