**Solapur, Maharashtra –** A 40-year-old Pune resident has died in Solapur, marking the first suspected fatality in Maharashtra from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The man, who was visiting his village for personal reasons, initially experienced cold, cough, and breathing difficulties. He was hospitalized on January 18th, initially showing improvement before his condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to his death. The preliminary post-mortem report suggests GBS as the cause of death, although further tests are pending.
Meanwhile, the number of GBS cases in Pune has climbed to 101, with 16 patients currently on ventilator support. The State health department is actively monitoring the situation, with the Rapid Response Team and Pune Municipal Corporation conducting extensive surveys in affected areas. Over 25,000 houses have been surveyed to date.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness that can progress to paralysis. While the exact cause remains unclear, it often follows a viral or bacterial infection. The health department is awaiting further test results to confirm the cause of death in the Solapur case.
