PRAYAGRAJ, INDIA—Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in the Maha Kumbh festivities in Prayagraj on Monday, January 27, 2025, taking a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam alongside prominent religious leaders. The event, which saw Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also participate, was marked by heightened security measures, including a vehicle ban in the Mela area and route diversions throughout the city.
Mr. Shah’s visit was preceded by a social media post expressing his eagerness to participate in the Kumbh, highlighting its significance as a symbol of Sanatan culture and its emphasis on harmony.
According to the state government, over 53.29 lakh people had taken a holy bath by 10 a.m. on Monday, with over 10 lakh “Kalpvasis” (those observing a period of religious devotion) present in the Mela area. The total number of participants since the Kumbh’s start on January 13th exceeds 13.21 crore. The Maha Kumbh is scheduled to continue until February 26th. The increased security measures, while ensuring a safe event, caused some disruption for local residents and pilgrims.
