**Mumbai, India** – Mumbai Police have expanded their investigation into the stabbing of actor Saif Ali Khan, questioning a woman in West Bengal for allegedly assisting the perpetrator, Sariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national.
Islam, who illegally entered India seven months ago, was arrested on January 19th after a 70-hour manhunt. He allegedly stabbed Khan six times during a botched burglary attempt at his Bandra residence on January 16th. Khan, who suffered serious injuries including a 2.5-inch piece of knife lodged near his spine, was later discharged from the hospital.
Police now allege that Khukumoni Sheikh, a resident of Nadia district, West Bengal, provided Islam with a mobile phone SIM card. The SIM card was traced to Sheikh, who is reportedly known to the accused. She is currently being questioned by authorities.
Islam, who used a false identity as “Bijoy Das,” obtained the SIM card using a local resident’s Aadhaar card during his time in West Bengal before moving to Mumbai. Police have confirmed his Bangladeshi identity through recovered identification documents, including a national ID card and a learner’s driving licence.
Islam’s father maintains his son’s innocence, claiming he is being framed and plans to seek help from Bangladeshi and Indian authorities. Meanwhile, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan’s wife, recounted the terrifying attack in her statement to the police, describing the intruder’s aggression. A nurse present during the incident stated that Islam demanded ₹1 crore (approximately $121,000 USD).
The investigation continues, focusing on Islam’s illegal entry into India and the network that allegedly assisted him.
